Made available by a Silver and Gold AFS returnee, host mom, and volunteer who wants to offset the costs of participating in the AFS exchange program and expand the AFS Effect and “Be the Change” by making a difference in their world and the local community.
Scholarship Type: Merit
Scholarship Value: $500 – $1,000*
Available Scholarships: Vary based upon availability
Applicable Programs: Semester and Year High School programs to destinations in Africa, South America, and Thailand
Application Deadline: April 20 (for summer and fall students); November 20 (for winter semester students)
Students must meet the following eligibility requirements:

- Ages 15 -18 years old
- Available to students living in the Silver & Gold Team Boundaries (Sacramento, Reno and Lake Tahoe areas)
- Scholarship winners are required to give at least 3 presentations about their experience (one required at an area team meeting) within the year following their return. A local volunteer or AFS staff member will work with them to schedule the presentations
- Complete a True Peace scholarship application which includes an essay on how the experience will be used to expand the AFS Effect and help communities understand the diverse perspectives in the world. Click here to download the application forms.
