John Bacon

Returnee – U.S. to Belgium, 1980-81

John spent his senior year of high school as an AFS student in Belgium, an experience that transformed him and continues to resonate more than forty years later.  He was inspired to participate by an enthusiastic local volunteer group and by the example of his uncle and aunt, who hosted an AFS student from Thailand.

John is the Deputy Chief Development Officer for Planned Giving at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Before joining The Met in September 2017, John was the Director of Planned Giving at The New York Public Library for 14 years.  John practiced trust and estates law for several years and before that worked in the museum and historic preservation fields.  In addition to AFS-USA, he serves on the board of the Historic Districts Council and on the steering committee of the Friends of American Art at Yale; he is a president emeritus of the Philanthropic Planning Group of Greater New York (PPGGNY).

John is a graduate of Yale College, the University of Delaware’s Winterthur Program, and Temple Law School.
