The AFS Arizona Area Team Scholarship seeks to fill the gap between the cost of participating in an AFS study abroad program and the funding available from other sources. These scholarships are made possible by the generosity of donors in Arizona.
| Scholarship Type: | Needs-based |
| Scholarship Value: | $500 to $5,000 |
| Available Scholarships: | Amount varies |
| Applicable Programs: | All AFS-USA Study Abroad and Gap Year programs |
| Application Deadline: | April 15 |
Applicant requirements:
- Be at least 15-20 years of age by the time of program departure
- Reside within the state of Arizona
- Submit a FAST application to determine if you qualify for financial assistance. The FAST is available after the first step of the AFS Study Abroad application is complete.
- Upon return to the U.S., each scholarship recipient agrees to be a registered AFS volunteer for at least one year, and to work with AFS volunteers to “pay it forward.” Volunteer activities might include blogging or posting while on program, helping future students travel abroad with AFS, promoting AFS within your community (e.g., at a high school, other service organizations or community events), or making a presentation (on Zoom or in person) to AFS Arizona Area Team.
Application Process: Scholarship awards are reviewed by the AFS Arizona Scholarship Committee and evaluated based on the economic needs of each individual student; the amount of funds they raise themselves, as documented online in the Sponsor an AFSer fundraising widget; and this application. Recipients and the amount of each local scholarship are decided by the AFS Arizona Scholarship Committee. Please note that all applicants are not guaranteed funding.
By April 15th, upload an AFS Arizona Scholarship Application in PDF format, complete, save, and email a scanned version or photo of it to the Arizona Scholarship Committee at [email protected] along with the materials listed below:
- Submit a maximum three-page essay (double-spaced using 12-point font) responding to questions set forth in the application.
- A letter from a parent or legal guardian on why they feel their child deserves a scholarship.
- A letter from a recent teacher or a school counselor explaining why they feel you are qualified to be an AFS Study Abroad student. The letter should be emailed directly from the teacher’s or counselor’s school email address to the Arizona Scholarship Committee at [email protected].
Additionally, applicant should document all fundraising using the Sponsor an AFSer fundraising widget as discussed above. By using the widget, the scholarship committee can review your fundraising for scholarship consideration.
