Things To Know About Germany
Germany is a world of majestic palaces, charming villages, and cutting-edge cities brimming with cosmopolitan delights. Known as the land of “Dichter und Denker” (poets and thinkers), Germany is an epicenter of artistic innovation and thought-provoking conversations. Germans are generally direct communicators, valuing honesty and openness. They also tend to be punctual and orderly, so you can expect trains and buses to arrive on time. If you’re environmentally conscious, you’ll appreciate Germany’s emphasis on recycling and conservation!
Mannheim, where you’ll spend most of your time, is the economic and cultural center of the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region. Founded as a planned fortress city in the early 17th century, Mannheim is known as the “City of Squares” (Quadratestadt). Its historic city center is laid out in a unique grid system where blocks are identified by letters and numbers instead of traditional street names. Famous for innovation, the first bicycle and automobile rides in history took place in Mannheim in the 19th century! The city has a long tradition of international migration, and from its early years, the city actively attracted settlers from across Europe, including French, Flemish, and Walloon communities.
