While international exchange remains central to AFS-USA’s mission, it isn’t the only way to foster intercultural learning! That’s why, beginning in 2026, AFS-USA is expanding its offerings to have an even greater impact in our own backyard. In response to growing polarization in the United States and external factors affecting global exchange, AFS-USA’s board, volunteers, and staff leadership aligned around a renewed focus on domestic engagement.
With a vision of a more resilient and understanding United States, AFS-USA is piloting new initiatives designed to connect individuals across regions, backgrounds, and perspectives. The goal is to create new opportunities for meaningful dialogue, relationship-building, and constructive engagements across differences and finding our commonalities. We will continue to invest in our life-changing core programs while also exploring different ways of rising to the challenges we are facing together.
In the summer of 2026, AFS-USA plans to pilot three exciting short domestic programs. Each program has a compelling theme, and includes content to improve cultural agility and dialogue skills, in alignment with the AFS-USA mission and domestic vision.
Pathfinder: NextGen Careers at Miami University of Ohio is a one-week career discovery program for US youth ages 16-17. This unique program unveils new advances in thought, technology, and practice in careers ranging from quantum physics, AI, medicine, technology and business, even entrepreneurship. The program engages youth in real-world hands-on activities that make connections between career interests and the technical and interpersonal skills needed for a specific job.
Lewis and Clark: Then and Now is a one-week immersive experience celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Trail. US youth will journey through the Pacific Northwest, retracing the final legs of the Lewis and Clark Trail. Participants will make connections between the legendary history of the 1804 expedition with the modern-day realities of the region and impact on local communities.
The Table We Share: Food and Culture is a one-week immersive experience celebrating the diverse culture, histories and culinary traditions of Chicago. Participants explore the city’s vibrant cultural enclaves, engaging with local experts to better understand the stories that have shaped Chicago’s neighborhoods. Through shared meals and guided reflection, the program invites participants to consider how the table becomes a space where differences are honored and common ground is discovered.
