What type of visa do I need?
You will be applying for a Multiple Entry visa.

How do I apply for the visa?
You will send certain required documents to AFS USA prior to departure and AFS will begin the visa process in Malaysia. When the visa in Malaysia has been approved, AFS Malaysia will send us a Calling Visa Letter which is issued by immigration. AFS USA will mail you this Calling Visa Letter so you can apply for a Multiple Entry Visa at the embassy or consulate that serves your residential state.

What documents will I need to send to AFS-USA to apply for the visa?

  • A full color photocopy of your United States Passport which is valid for at least six months after your return.
  • 4 Passport-sized Photographs
  • Money order made payable to AFS USA for the visa initiation fee (Scholarship recipients do not have to mail a payment)

When do I apply for the visa?
AFS-USA must receive your full passport copy and passport-sized photographs two months before departure.
You must apply for your Multiple Entry Visa as soon as you receive your visa support documents, typically a month prior to departure.

How much will the visa cost?
The visa processing fee is currently 10 (USD) and must be paid before your departure. If you are a BP Scholarship recipient, you do not have to pay the visa processing fee as it is covered by your scholarship.
The Consulate General of Malaysia will charge a visa processing fee. You should inquire with the consulate regarding any changes to the specific visa fees assessed by your consulate.

Are there any other expected costs?
There are additional costs involved in obtaining and mailing the required documents.

Are any of these costs covered in my AFS program tuition?
No, your program fee does not cover any of the costs related to obtaining your passport or visa.

Can I travel before the start of my program?
You should not plan any trips outside of the United States one month before your program start date. As stated, obtaining a visa takes time and your passport will be required. If you travel before the start of your program and do not allow enough time to obtain your visa, you will run the risk of not being able to participate on your program.
