IMPORTANT: BEFORE YOU START
The visa process starts in Argentina. AFS Argentina will apply for an entry permit to Argentina on your behalf. Once approved, the entry permit will be sent to your consulate in the U.S. After the entry permit is granted, AFS Argentina will work on submitting a visa application on your behalf. In order for AFS Argentina to obtain the entry permit for you, you must send us scans of every page of your current passport, including the front and back covers. We CANNOT move forward in your visa application without this entry permit. Therefore, it crucial that you provide us with scans of every page of your current passport by the deadline noted below.
- You must email a color, high-quality scan of every page and both covers of your passport no later than May 24, 2026.
-
- Please ensure that the image is of the highest quality, in color, with no lines, aberrations, fingers in the image, or extra marks. If the scans are not perfectly clear, they will not be accepted.
-
- Please attach these scans (in a single multi-page PDF) in an email sent to [email protected]
-
- If you are having trouble emailing because of the file size, the website www.smallpdf.com may be useful to you.
-
- Confirm your birth date, country of birth, and consulate of your jurisdiction (where you will be applying from)
STEP 1: Research visa requirements for Argentina
• The entire visa application process will be managed by AFS Argentina. It is incredibly important to review requirements and submit all necessary documents in a timely manner.
- Visit the Embassy and Consulates of Argentina’s website to determine your requirements for an “Informal Studies” Visa. You will likely have to email your consulate to obtain specific visa requirements for your visa type, as the information may not be readily available on their webpage.
- The Argentinian Government’s TIE Visa guidance can be found here. Please do not start the application yet, as AFS Argentina will be doing this on your behalf.
• Click here to find which consulate has jurisdiction over your state.
• The TIE Application process is relatively new for AFS students, so please be sure to confirm its requirements with your consulate.
STEP 2: Contact your Consulate/ Embassy to confirm that their websites are up to date
Contact your consulate by email and phone and politely ask your consulate the following questions:
- What are the required documents for a TIE 24H Prmit?
- What documents will need to be notarized and/or require an Apostille?
- Is the Consulate web information up to date?
- How many passport photos are required for the visa application?
- What is the visa processing fee?
- Once all documentation is completed and submitted, how long does it take for the visa to be issued?
- Please note when contacting your consulate:
- You may need to contact your consulate multiple times.
- If you cannot get a hold of your consulate, please follow the instructions provided on their website.
STEP 3: Start collecting documents needed for your visa application
To assist you with the visa process, we have provided helpful tips for collecting some of the required documents for your application.
There are two separate sets of documents that you needs to collect:
a) Documents required by your consulate for your visa application and
b) Documents requested by AFS Argentina that you must obtain and carry with you to Argentina to complete the process.
Follow our steps below for collecting your application materials.
**PLEASE CLICK HERE to review our guide on how to collect visa application materials.
You will need to collect additional items not required by the consulate for your AFS program. These documents are listed below and in our guide beginning on page 4. You must email scans of these documents to your visa specialist prior to your departure. Click here to review our Visa FAQ webpage with information on the notary, apostille and translation process.
- Apostilled Parental & Travel Authorization Form AFS Argentina (Venia de Viaje & Delegacion Parental).
-
- This needs to be notarized before the Apostille. Some states have requested a ‘Declarative Statement’ be attached and notarized. Please check the requirements with your Secretary of State.
- Sample form
- Some Consulates provide their own parental consent form. If the consulate requires you to complete their parental consent form, please complete both forms as the above form must be the one taken with you to Argentina.
- Please put the following people as your legal guardians:
- Luis Ignacio Larrarte Salazar, DNI (National Identity Number) 29.768.846, Operations Director of Asociación Civil AFS Programas Interculturales
- Mr. Juan Daniel Medici, DNI 23.143.619, National Director of AFS Programas Interculturales Argentina
- Address for both Luis Ignacio and Juan: 328 Tte. Juan D. Peron- 3rd Floor, CP1038, Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina.
- Please put the following people as your legal guardians:
- IMPORTANT: Please make a photocopy of the IDs (Passport preferred, driver’s license or other government-issued ID usually accepted) of each parent/guardian who has signed the parental consent form.
- Staple the photocopies to the parental consent form.
-
- Apostilled Copy of Birth Certificate (Translated if needed)
- STEP 1: Order a Certified Copy of your Birth Certificate
- To receive a certified copy of your birth certificate, you must contact the local government in the state where your birth certificate was originally filed. Click here to view the requirements for the state in which you were born.
- Order the long form of your birth certificate
- STEP 2: Send your birth certificate to the Secretary of State in which you were born for an Apostille. Check the back of the birth certificate for signatures and be sure to scan it to share as well.
- STEP 1: Order a Certified Copy of your Birth Certificate
-
- STEP 3: Translate your certificate into Spanish
- It is required for your birth certificate to be translated into Spanish, notarized, and apostilled.
- You may use a translation service (See our Visa FAQs for a list of translators that has worked in the past), a high school Spanish teacher, friend, or family member.
- STEP 4: Have the translated Certificate notarized
- You will need to attach the certificate of translation accuracy attached. The certificate of accuracy should have the translator’s signature notarized. You may choose to google one online or type a certificate yourself that includes your state’s standard notarial block. *Note: You can only notarize and apostille the translation in the State in which it is translated. Thus, if your translator is registered in the state different from the state in which you reside, you must notarize and apostille the translated document in that state.
- STEP 5: Have your translated birth certificate apostilled in the same state it was translated/notarized in.
- STEP 3: Translate your certificate into Spanish
STEP 4: Share all collected documents with AFS
Collect and prepare all of the documents required and share high-quality scans (not photographs, the consulate will reject these) with AFS via email [email protected] as soon as they become available.
The following documents will be provided by AFS for your application:
- AFS-USA LETTER OF PROGRAM ACCEPTANCE LETTER
- AFS MEDICAL INSURANCE LETTER
- AFS ARGENTINA VISA INVITATION LETTER
- This letter contains your host family address in the second paragraph.
- This letter contains your RENURE number at the bottom.
- ACTA DE NOTIFICATION:

- SOLICITUD DE PRECARGA DE DATOS
- DISPOSICIÓN DE MIGRACIONES
- This document- Disposición de Migraciones- is NOT required for the visa application; however, it IS REQUIRED FOR ENTRY TO ARGENTINA. Please bring it with you and show it to a customs officer together with your passport when entering Argentina. This is to ensure that the Argentinian customs officer grants you a visa for a duration of the program. (The visa stamp in your passport that you receive in the U.S. refers to the window of entry to Argentina only.)
STEP 5: AFS Argentina will apply for you
- Once all documents have been approved and submitted, AFS Argentina will submit your visa application.
- The processing times vary between a few business days or up to 3 weeks.
- Once the visa application is approved, the consular fee (~100USD) will be shared and must be paid within 24 hours.
- Once the payment is received, Argentina’s Immigration Office will take up to 10 days to issue the TIE permit.
- You will receive a digital copy of the TIE permit once it is issued via email.
STEP 6: [IMPORTANT] Upload your visa scan to your AFS Dashboard and bring essential documents with you to Argentina
- When you receive your e-visa, it is important that you check for any errors immediately. Please ensure that the program dates, the spelling of your name, and passport number are all correct. Bring any errors to the consulate’s attention and also inform AFS.
