Our application process helps us get to know your family, prepare you for hosting, and ensure a positive experience for both host families and students. Here’s what you can expect.
The AFS-USA Host Family Application Process
Opening your home to an international exchange student is an exciting experience—and AFS-USA will support you throughout the journey.
1. Start Your Online Application
Families interested in hosting an AFS exchange student begin by completing an online application. This helps us learn more about your household, interests, and what kind of student might be a great match for your family.
What you’ll share:
- Basic household information
- Family interests and lifestyle
- Your motivation for hosting

2. Reference & Background Checks
As part of the process, we will contact the personal references you provide. These references help confirm the information in your application and provide insight into your family and community.
All household members age 17 or older who live in the home must consent to and complete a criminal background check. This is a standard requirement for international exchange programs.
3. Family Interview & Home Visit
An AFS representative will schedule an interview with your family in your home.
During this visit, we will:
- Get to know your family and daily life
- Talk about hosting expectations
- Answer any questions you may have
All household members should be present so everyone can learn about the experience together.
4. Select Your Student
As you’re working on your application, you’ll have the opportunity to review profiles of incoming students. You’ll also be able to read letters written by incoming students to their potential host families.
You can learn about their:
- Interests and hobbies
- Personality and goals
- Home country and culture
AFS-USA staff and volunteers help guide the matching process so you can find a student who feels like a great fit for your family.
5. Complete Any Supplemental Forms
Some placements require additional consent forms from students or their guardians, depending on program requirements.
If applicable, AFS-USA staff will guide you through this step.
6. Final Application Review
Before placement is finalized, AFS-USA staff conduct a final review of your application to ensure all program requirements are complete.
Important: Hosting a student also depends on receiving approval from your local high school.
7. Host Family Orientation
Before your student arrives, you’ll participate in an orientation designed to prepare you for the exchange experience.
Topics include:
- Cultural adjustment
- Supporting your student
- Program expectations
- Resources and support available to host families
You’ll also meet members of your local AFS network. After orientation, prepare to meet the newest member of your family!
8. Welcome Your Student
Congratulations! It’s time to welcome your AFS student and begin an unforgettable cultural exchange experience. With support from AFS-USA and your local volunteers, you’ll be ready to create meaningful connections, share everyday moments, and make memories that last a lifetime.
