For the fifth consecutive year, Jenny and Mike Messner have established the Speedwell Matching Gift Campaign, providing support for students from all backgrounds to participate in AFS-USA exchange experiences that build global understanding, cross-cultural connection, and the skills young people need to thrive in an interconnected world.

Since the campaign began, more than 165 students have received support to participate in AFS-USA summer, semester, and year-long programs. These students, representing more than 25 states, have engaged in exchange experiences in more than 25 countries, resulting in over $1.6 million in financial assistance awarded.

Your gift helps make these transformative learning opportunities possible—supporting students through financial assistance, program access, and other areas of greatest need.

Thanks to Jenny and Mike’s dedication to helping young people pursue these experiences, every gift of any size—up to $250,000—will be matched through August 31, 2026. That means your generosity will go twice as far in opening doors for students to learn, grow, and lead in an increasingly connected world.

A Journey That Sparked a Lifetime of Impact

In 1970, when Jenny Messner boarded an airplane bound for Brazil, she had no way of knowing the experience would transform her life. She didn’t quite know what to expect — yet Jenny knew she was ready to be changed by Brazil. And she was—by the warmth of its people, its language, and its daily rhythms. She returned home a year later with her perspective expanded—for good.

More than 50 years later, Jenny still credits that experience with shaping her life. And ever since, she has worked to remove barriers so other students can have that same opportunity. We hope her story inspires you to make an impact for young students who are passionate about exploring the world.
