It’s a great week to be in Chicago! The Table We Share group reports are making our mouths water here on the Innovation Team.

On Tuesday, the group learned about Chicago’s history at the Chicago History Museum with longtime AFSer and docent Rosa Ramirez.

They spent the afternoon exploring Albany park in partnership with the Tahanan Center, a collective of Filipino students and young adults sharing their culture through food, dance, and educational programming. The students had the opportunity to learn a traditional Filipino dance and chat with the students over lunch.

On Wednesday, the students explored Chinatown in the morning, learning about the differences between Cantonese food in the US and China and the challenges that Chinese Americans have faced throughout Chicago’s history. The group then celebrated Chinese food culture through a dumpling making workshop and family-style lunch.

After lunch, the group toured Bronzeville, learning about the African American experience in Chicago, both today and during the Great Migration. They ended the official schedule at Shawn Michelle’s, a Black-owned ice cream shop, before spending some unstructured time together exploring Little Italy.
