Bella C. from Colorado Receives AATF & AFS-USA French Summer Language Camp Scholarship
We’re excited to announce the recipient of the AATF & AFS-USA French Summer Language Camp Scholarship, Bella C. from Colorado! This scholarship, in partnership with the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF), provides a scholarship to a high school student interested in broadening their understanding of the Francophone world and strengthening their French language skills.
Created with the purpose of encouraging U.S. high school students to pursue authentic experiences using the French language and to provide French teachers an opportunity to recognize promising high school students, AFS-USA and the AATF are excited to support Bella as she attends the AFS France Summer Language Camp in France this upcoming summer. When speaking with AFS-USA staff about the award, here’s what Bella had to say:
What does receiving this scholarship mean to you?
This scholarship means so much to me to receive because it has motivated me to grow in my French skills so that I can make the most of the trip and expand my horizons through travel and learning. I also feel like it changes the meaning of the trip, because I know that AFS has invested in my individual learning experience, and while I am beyond grateful, it also feels like a personal challenge and goal to do my absolute best and learn as much about French culture and language as possible. I’m thrilled!
Why do you love French language and culture?
I love learning a new language because it is romantic, and learning about French culture and language feels like I am exploring a different, new and exciting world. I have never gotten the chance to travel, so I truly believe that something like this can help me to break out of my own understanding of the world, and I can grow a deeper appreciation for life.
What are some things you’re looking forward to experiencing in France?
I am really looking forward to the day trips to the surrounding cities and museums, as well as going to the beach. I LOVE spending time outside or exploring, and I absolutely love museums. I am hoping that I will get to see some art there (I love art history). I am also really excited to just meet new people that I get to learn with.
Why do you think studying abroad is important for language learning?
Studying abroad is the most effective way to learn a language and a culture, because how else would you apply what you learn?

Congratulations to Bella on this exciting opportunity – we can’t wait to hear all about your trip! If you’d like to learn more about other study abroad scholarships that can help fund your next adventure, visit afsusa.org/scholarships!
