Get Started

Follow the four simple steps to apply to be an AFS Host Family. Enrich your family’s life by sharing it with a young person from another culture.

1. Start the Process

Submit a Host Family Interest Form to be connected with AFS in your community. AFS has a network of thousands of dedicated and trained volunteers nationwide who will guide you through the process and answer questions you may have about the hosting experience.

2. Learn More

Interested families and individuals are strongly encouraged to attend an Online Information Session with a Program Advisor to learn about the benefits of hosting, the application process, how AFS supports host families, and more. For additional information, you can also check out our Frequently Asked Questions and read about the countries from which our students come.

3. Complete an Online Application

On the application, you’ll be asked to write about your household, community, lifestyle, and what is important to your family. In addition, household members ages 14 and older will be required to complete a criminal background check.

4. Be Matched with Your Student

Review student profiles with your local volunteer once your application has been approved. AFS students have demonstrated an interest in immersing themselves in different cultures, so you’ll be sure to find a student that matches your interests and lifestyle. You will also be invited to complete an online host family orientation.
