Welcome to the AFS Virginia Team Site!

The AFS Virginia Team honors our longest serving Chair, Jerene Thomas. Jerene’s remarkable life included volunteer work for 55 years, until she was 92, with AFS (formerly the American Field Service) to manage its Virginia program. In this capacity she earned the Galatti Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service, the most prestigious commendation an AFS volunteer can receive.

Jerene described the AFS Virginia team as “a group of enthusiastic volunteers of all ages who are trying to make the world a better, more peaceful place through a high school exchange program. Whoever you are, wherever you are in Virginia, we would love to have you join our volunteers. Whether you have previous AFS experience or are simply interested in intercultural exchanges, we have all sorts of opportunities to help, ranging from small or occasional tasks to longer major activities.”

Jerene’s 55 years of AFS volunteer service is a testament to her character and passion for the AFS mission to help create a more just and peaceful world.
