AFS Local & National Scholarships

Students residing within the AFS E-Z Pass Area Team region are eligible to apply for one or more of the local scholarships offered by the AFS E-Z Pass Area Team.  Descriptions of the three scholarships, eligibility criteria, and directions to apply are below.

The AFS E-Z Pass Area Team is comprised of southeastern New York and Connecticut, including all of New York City, Long Island, Delaware, Dutchess, Columbia, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester Counties, as well as Fairfield County, CT.

Local Area Team Scholarships


E-Z Pass Area Team AFS Study Abroad Scholarship

The E-Z Pass Area Team has established a general scholarship in the amount $1000, to support an AFS applicant who is accepted to go on an AFS program.  All AFS program applicants residing in the E-Z Pass Area Team region are welcome to apply

*** This scholarship is contingent upon acceptance by AFS-USA and the partner country.  If the applicant's program of choice has already been filled, or the applicant does not meet the program requirements, the scholarship may be applied to a different AFS program.

Kirby Capen AFS Study Abroad Scholarship

Kirby Capen was an AFS Returnee to Ghana.  Eager to spread the AFS mission of intercultural communication and peace, Kirby became an active member of the AFS E-Z Pass Area Team upon completion of her AFS program.  In memory of Kirby, the AFS E-Z Pass Area Team has established a $1000 scholarship to support a student accepted to go on an AFS program.  

This scholarship is to be awarded to a student who shows commitment and enthusiasm to both volunteering and intercultural learning.  All AFS program applicants residing in the E-Z Pass Area Team region are welcome to apply; preference will be given to applicants residing in Long Island, NY.

*** This scholarship is contingent upon acceptance by AFS-USA and the partner country.  If the applicant's program of choice has already been filled, or the applicant does not meet the program requirements, the scholarship may be applied to a different AFS program.


Sharon Lage AFS Study Abroad Scholarship

In honor of former AFS E-Z Pass Area Team Chair, Sharon Lage, and her deep commitment to promoting study abroad and to finding financial solutions for students to go on program, the AFS E-Z Pass Area Team has established a $1000 scholarship to support a student going abroad on an AFS program. 

All AFS program applicants residing in the E-Z Pass Area Team region are welcome to apply; preference will be given to applicants who live in Dutchess County, NY, who are applying for an AFS Summer Homestay Program.

How to Apply

2019 Deadline to apply for one or more of the AFS E-Z Pass Local Scholarships is: March 31, 2019 (11:59pm EST)

To be considered for one or more of these merit-based scholarship, applicants must:
  • Have an open AFS application assigned to the AFS E-Z Pass Area Team (as defined above).
  • Submit his/her AFS online application.
  • Download and complete the 2019 AFS E-Z Pass Application Form, indicating one or more of the scholarships listed above, for which the applicant is applying.
  • Email the completed appication to AFS E-Z Area Team Chair, Elinor Levy, by the scholarship application deadline noted above.
Applications will be reviewed by members of the E-Z Pass Volunteer Leadership Team. The winner will be notified by April 25, 2019.
