The opportunity to study abroad should be available to everyone, regardless of financial realities. Through merit- and need-based scholarships and personal fundraising tips, AFS is dedicated to supporting you and your family in every way we can to make studying abroad a reality.

Full and partial merit-based scholarships for a variety of program destinations

Cultural Explorer Merit Scholarship

The Cultural Explorer Merit Scholarship is available for students interested in studying abroad for a year in Bosnia & Herzegovina, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Latvia, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Thailand or Turkey.

Sakura Merit Scholarship

The Sakura (cherry blossom) Scholarship is a 50%, merit- and need-based scholarship. This scholarship covers half of the AFS-USA program fee for the 2016 high school year program in Japan. Two scholarships will be offered.

Top Global Learning Schools Merit Scholarship

Each year, AFS honors select schools for their commitment to international education with the Top Global Learning Schools award. In recognition of the global-minded thinking of these schools' students, we are pleased to invite students from any current or former Top Global Learning School to participate in a national, competitive scholarship contest centered on the theme of global citizenship.

Vaya a América Latina Merit Scholarship

The Vaya a América Latina Merit Scholarship is available for students interested in studying abroad this summer in Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Panama, or Paraguay.

Viaggio Italiano Merit Scholarship

The Viaggio Italiano Merit Scholarship is available for students interested in studying abroad for a year or semester in Italy.

Yoshi Hattori Memorial Merit Scholarship

This full, merit-based scholarship is designed to promote intercultural understanding and peace, and was created in memory of Yoshi Hattori, an AFS Exchange Student to the U.S. from Japan who died in 1992. One scholarship is available.

Full and partial awards for eligible students with demonstrated financial need.

Global Leaders Scholarship

Global Leaders is our flagship need-based award program for students who are in need of financial assistance. As part of our commitment to make study abroad possible for all students, we encourage you to apply for a Global Leaders need-based award.

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) Program

CBYX offers American students the opportunity to live and study abroad in Germany for an academic year through joint sponsorship by the U.S. Congress and the German Bundestag. Congress-Bundestag students serve as youth ambassadors of the United States, sharing their life and culture with their German hosts and building greater international understanding of the United States and its diversity.

Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Abroad Program

Full, merit-based scholarship through the U.S. Department of State to Promote mutual understanding between the people of the United States and people of countries with significant Muslim populations.

NSLI-Youth Scholarships to Study Language Abroad 

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, NSLI-Y provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students and recent high school graduates to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs. Languages include Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian (Tajiki), Russian, and Turkish.
