Winter Departure: the 1st Saturday in November, 5pm Alaska Time
Summer Departure: the 1st Saturday in May, 5pm Alaska Time


PETER LARSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($1,000)  - Scholarship Application

Peter Larson (1940-2014) of Homer was, along with his wife Flo, a life long volunteer with AFS. He and his wife hosted many times and participated in orientations, chapter and area teams, and numerous orientations. Both of his sons are returnees. It was one of Peter's wishes that people donate to AFS in his memory. The area team has created a scholarship in his memory. Additional donations can be made to this scholarship on our secure donations page

HOW TO APPLY: If you have been accepted to the AFS program and are an Alaskan resident you are eligible for this scholarship. Flo Larsen is currently in charge of selecting recipients from the entire pool of Alaska students going abroad.  Please note that scholarship recipients will be asked to post monthly photos and updates on our facebook page while they are abroad and to give a talk to their high school about their experience on their return.

ALASKA HOST SIBLING SCHOLARSHIP ($1,000)

This scholarship is for former Alaskan host siblings who want to go abroad themselves. Additional donations can be made to this scholarship on our secure donations page.

HOW TO APPLY: If you have been accepted to the AFS program and are an Alaskan resident and your family has hosted before, you are eligible for this scholarship. Download the and fill out the scholarship application (right click and save to your computer). When completed, email it to alaska@afsusa.org. Ask your fomer host sibling(s) to write you a reference letter to the same address. The volunteer scholarship committee will evaluate all scholarships together. Please note that scholarship recipients will be asked to post monthly photos and updates on our facebook page while they are abroad and to give a talk to their high school about their experience on their return.
