Community Development in Fiji

Fiji is home to beautiful beaches, diverse coral reefs, and thousands of species of marine wildlife. Spend your summer in this tropical paradise while making a difference in local community development on this two-week Global Prep program. You’ll join in critical volunteer projects like implementing resource management facilities (such as recycling drop off points) or rehabilitating a school. As you contribute to impactful sustainability initiatives, you and your group will get to explore the stunning scenery and learn about the history of the Fiji Islands. Then in your free time, you can try water sports like surfing and snorkeling—and even go dolphin watching!

Your Journey to Fiji

Arriving in Nadi

Your journey will begin in Los Angeles, where you’ll meet your Group Leader and the other members of your program. You’ll travel together to Nadi, the capital of Fiji, where you’ll be met at the airport by local staff or volunteers. There you’ll enjoy a welcome breakfast and orientation, where you’ll discuss your project itinerary and familiarize yourself with local customs. Then you’ll make your way to the other side of Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest island, to your home base in Dawasamu. You’ll sit down to a lunch of traditional food made with fresh fruits and vegetables before meeting the experienced volunteer team you’ll be working with throughout your stay.

Your Volunteer Projects

As a volunteer in Fiji, you’ll help implement a Clean Village project along with local community leaders. Your daily activities may vary depending on the needs of the community, but you and your group can expect to contribute to projects that focus on resource management. For example, you could help construct a recycling drop off point in a local village, getting a hands-on education about providing resources for a community in need of assistance. You might also take part in other development projects like refurbishing a local nursing home or district kindergarten. Additional activities may include visiting nearby communities like Nataleira and Silana to organize sports and games with neighborhood children.

Your Accommodations

During your two-week program, you’ll stay in dormitory-style accommodations in the Tailevu province of Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest island. You can expect to share a room with other students of the same gender. Your accommodations will be basic but clean, comfortable, and safe. For your meals, you may have the chance to try local favorites like palusami (taro leaves with coconut cream, onions, and beef) or spicy coconut pork.

Exploring the Area

The dramatic Fijian landscape is defined by sweeping volcanoes, dense jungles, fresh water waterfalls, white sand beaches, and colorful coral reefs. In between your volunteer activities, you’ll get to explore the natural beauty with excursions around the islands and some dolphin watching! To stay active, you and your friends will travel to Leleuvia Island for water sports like snorkeling, kayaking, sailing, and paddle boarding. You’ll also have the chance to learn about the fascinating history of Fiji by exploring the local indigenous culture and trekking to the neighboring island of Ovalau, which is the ancestral capital of the islands. At the end of your program, you’ll travel back to Nadi Bay to reflect on all you’ve accomplished and enjoy a farewell meal with your group.

Returning Home

"Life-changing" is hard to describe, yet it’s nearly always the first thing that AFSers say when asked about their experience abroad.
"Transformed" is another one. When you return home, if you’re like most AFSers, you’ll bring with you a sense of accomplishment unlike any other. You’ll have gained maturity and independence, discovered new passions, and feel like you can do anything you set your mind to. That transformation isn’t visible only to you, though - others see it as well. AFSers gain critical skills for college and careers, ranging from language fluency to intercultural competence and critical reasoning. "Life-changing" means it’s only the beginning.

Please Note: Travel date ranges are meant to help with general scheduling and are subject to change; please don’t book any travel based on these dates until you’ve received confirmation from AFS. All programs, prices, and travel dates are subject to change without notice.
