Outstanding Outreach to Educator Events

Since 2012, AFS-USA's Outreach to Educators Advisory Group (OEAG)  and the School Outreach and Educational Partnerships (SOEP) Unit has been collaborating with AFS volunteers across the nation to coordinate innovative programs that are specifically targeted to educators. These events ranged from workshops, seminars, and educational sessions. Find some of our most successful events below! 

Missouri Gateway Area Team - Missouri

The Missouri Gateway Area Team facilitated a staff development seminar for 140 teachers and administrators of Parkway South High School during a scheduled staff meeting, and  provided a virtual presentation of theThe Missouri Gateway Area Team facilitated a staff development seminar for 140 teachers and administrators of Parkway South High School during a scheduled staff meeting, and  provided a virtual presentation of the resources offered by the School Outreach and Educational Partnership Unit at AFS-USA.

San Francisco Bay Area Team - California

The San Francisco Bay Area Team invited Ray Gilstrap, the Chief Technology Officer for Information Technology at NASA Ames Research Center. Mr. Gilstrap was able to use his scientific research and knowledge to develop a project in Kenya that enabled women to walk home safely in areas where they may be at risk, during non-daylight hours.The San Francisco Bay Area Team invited Ray Gilstrap, the Chief Technology Officer for Information Technology at NASA Ames Research Center. Southern New England Area Team - Connecticut

The Southern New England Area Team coordinated a presentation for students and teachers to feature representatives who work with CODEFEM. The human rights advocacy group for women in Guatemala, travelled to the US to speak with the students about the human rights work they do, the needs of the families in Guatemala and gave updates on the project that has already been funded. Along with the presentation given by the CODEFEM members, students from the AFS Club shared the work they have done this past year, including selling Fair Trade coffee, showing the film "Girl Rising", and running the children’s games at a Memorial Day event in a local town.The Southern New England Area Team coordinated a presentation for students and teachers to feature representatives who work with CODEFEM. Silver and Gold Area Team - California

The Silver & Gold Team  facilitated workshops in two local high schools during International Education Week. These workshops provided global competency activities to world language students. Two of the language teachers, both AFS Returnees, o Rio Americano High School and Dixon High School agreed to partner with AFS.The Silver & Gold Team  facilitated workshops in two local high schools during International Education Week. Ohio River Valley Area Team - Ohio

The Ohio River Valley Team hosted an event for principals, curriculum developers and guidance counselors. The event featured a presentation on the connection between global awareness and STEM education. The presentation also highlighted some the innovative programs offered by AFS-USA, including Wildlife Conservation on Safari in Kenya. The program also featured some Sponsored Programs students who shared short presentations about their cultural exchange experiences and how they have impacted them academically and socio-culturally.The Ohio River Valley Team hosted an event for principals, curriculum developers and guidance counselors.
