Lee Mazza’s zest for life and meeting new people was beyond special.

Lee was born in Oakley, California to Portuguese immigrants. She and her husband Bill raised their children in the Sacramento area. Both children – Jamie Richard Mazza (to Germany, 1977) and Sandra Fields (to Brazil, 1979) – were AFS students while attending Mira Loma High School.

Lee was first introduced to AFS when she hosted John Paul Salguero from Guatemala (1974 -1975) and then Helena Clouwaert from Belgium (1977-1978). Lee later became AFS USA Area Director and was instrumental in recruiting dozens of Host Families and matching them with international students. Many of these matches created lifelong connections. In addition, Lee’s fundraising efforts made the AFS Club at Mira Loma High School one of the most popular clubs on campus. She hosted many other students in her loving home for over 10 years, believing that AFS promotes world peace.

We are deeply saddened by Lee’s passing. Contributions made to AFS-USA in her memory will help provide scholarship support for AFS students from Northern California.
