From the AFS-USA President & CEO, Tara Boyce-Hofmann
As we approach International Education Week (IEW) from November 18-22, we’re thrilled to spotlight the incredible ways AFS-USA can support you in bringing the world into your classrooms. This month’s newsletter highlights diverse opportunities for you and/or your students, from pen pal exchanges with students in India to virtual STEM academies and cultural explorations of Malaysia, all designed to enrich your students’ understanding of our global community.
Your commitment to promoting global citizenship and cross-cultural understanding is essential in building bridges across cultures, fostering peace, and encouraging a more just (and hopeful) world. Thank you for all that you do to inspire future generations toward these values. Here’s to a transformative IEW!
Gearing up for International Education Week
International Education Week (IEW) takes place from November 18-22, 2024. AFS students are eager to present about their home countries and cultures to their classmates, teachers, and other groups. If you’re in a school without AFS students this year, let us know and we’ll help connect you with a presentation!
As part of IEW, help your students make plans for next summer or year to spend time abroad. French teachers can nominate up to 3 students for the AFS-USA and AATF $7,500 scholarship for the AFS four week French Summer camp in Nice, France where they’ll make friends from around the world while learning more about the French language and culture in July 2025. Nominations are due on November 24. |
Inform your students that December 4th is the last day to apply for a fully-funded scholarship for a 2025-26 program through the U.S. Department of State’s, Youth Exchange & Study (YES) Abroad program! AFS staff members are standing by to Zoom into your classroom for 15 minutes to share this scholarship information with your students! Contact us at [email protected]. |
If you want a more intimate look at the scholarship and interview process for students applying for scholarships, consider becoming an interviewer (in-person or virtual) this winter. Express your interest here and we’ll help you get started meeting some amazing student applicants.

Partnerships & Collaboration Provide More Options for IEW
The World Food Prize Foundation’s Global Challenge curriculum empowers high school students to address food security, agriculture and sustainability issues. Students present their research at Youth Institutes where they are also able to explore careers and develop skills in critical thinking, research, and public speaking. These transformative experiences are developing young leaders dedicated to global challenges which is in line with AFS-USA’s goals of creating active global citizens who are resilient, able to think critically, and prepared to engage on a global scale to improve conditions for the world’s people and the planet. |
The National Museum of American Diplomacy is just one aspect of the U.S. Department of State with whom AFS-USA partners for a variety of endeavors. We are proud to share with you the resources dedicated to educators to work with your class on a diplomacy simulation. Join their upcoming webinar during IEW “Complexities and Contradictions: Treaty-Making Between the U.S. and Native American Nations in the Early Republic” on November 20 at 7:00pm Eastern / 4:00pm Pacific. Find testimonials and a lot of resources on their website. |
The Global Learning for an Open World “GLOW” Virtual Conference takes place this year on November 20-21 during IEW and has a flexible drop in and out format for those who want to participate to allow for you to engage when your schedule allows. Network, engage, and learn with and from educators near and far on topics ranging from youth voice, global competence and international mindedness, curriculum and assessment, intercultural communication, experiential education, and future-friendly schools. Register today! |
International Education Week is a great time to remember that both the U.S. Department of Education AND the U.S. Department of State are encouraging you to infuse global ideas into your classroom and to encourage discussions about culture and difference.
Share your global story with your students, encourage them to explore topics that impact the people and planet around us, and create a learning space that fosters active global citizenship. If you need ideas, we’re here to help.
