Yoshikawa named ambassador to U.N.

The government on Friday appointed Motohide Yoshikawa, Ambassador to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, as Ambassador to the United Nations.

Yoshikawa, 62, joined the Foreign Ministry in 1974 and has since served in such posts as Director General of the Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau and Ambassador to Spain.

In other key appointments for the ministry, Akitaka Saiki, Deputy Minister for Political Affairs, was named Vice Minister to replace Chikao Kawai.

Shinsuke Sugiyama, Director General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, was appointed to succeed Saiki as Deputy Minister.
