Program Details

This 7 week program is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the lifestyle and culture of Argentina. Improve your Spanish and learn about community life by living with a host family and attending a local high school. Besides your school work, there will be plenty to keep you busy, including picnics, sports, arts, new food like parrillada (mixed grill), camping, different types of national music (from tango to rock), and, of course, making new and long-lasting friends.

You and your fellow AFSers will fly together between Miami and Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina. Upon your arrival, you will be met by volunteers and staff of AFS Argentina and taken to the Arrival Orientation site located in outside Buenos Aires. There you will take part in a 2-day orientation that will help prepare you for your intercultural experience.

Following the orientation, you and the group will travel to your host community by bus where you will be met by the local volunteers and your host families.

Host Families
As with most AFS programs, you will be placed with a volunteer host family who will invite you into their homes and provide room, board, and guidance during your time abroad.

Argentinian host families, like families around the world, come in all shapes and sizes. It is possible that you will have two host-parents and host siblings, but we cannot guarantee that will be the case. You may be placed with a single parent family or with a family that doesn’t have children. What we can guarantee, though, is that your host family will be excited to learn about you and your culture and that they want you to become a part of their family.

Students are placed throughout Argentina. Most placements (approx. 60%) are in suburban areas. 15% are classified as urban placements and the remaining 15% are rural.

Host Schools
Most students are placed in public schools. Due to a 2 week long winter break during the month of July, you will only attend school for 5 of your weeks abroad.

Uniforms are required and students are responsible for this cost (about $100).

Weather
Remember that Argentina is in the southern hemisphere so the weather seasons are reversed from those in the northern hemisphere. Even though you will be departing during our summer, it will be winter in Argentina. Please pack appropriately.

Additional information will be provided to participants prior to departure.
