Steps to Become an AFSer

1. Consider your program options
Think about which countries and programs are most exciting to you.

2. Get involved with AFS

3. Talk with your parents
The decision to go abroad is a family decision.

4. Submit your pre-application and $75 application fee
Apply online or by mail.

5. After you submit the pre-application, we will:
  • Match you with both a local volunteer and an Advisor from the Student Services Office.
  • Provide you with a login and password to the online full application.
  • Welcome you to submit scholarship materials. Often we can tell you the results before you begin completing the full application.
  • Invite you to online info sessions to get tips on how to fundraise for your AFS program.
  • Apply for a passport at your local post office. If you already have a passport, it will need to be valid for 6 months after your return to the U.S. from your AFS experience.
6. Submit the full application and $900 tuition deposit
Here are a few tips:
  • Completing the full application requires forms to be completed by your parents, school counselor, and doctor. You will also have an interview with an AFS Volunteer.
  • Scholarships are applied towards tuition and cannot be applied to the $900 tuition deposit.
  • Program space is limited, and AFS will not reserve a space for you until your full application is complete. Submit your full application early!

7. Submit your full application before the deadlines below
It’s never too early to apply! We encourage you to submit your full application as soon as you are ready, because we accept applications on a rolling basis. Some popular programs may be filled prior to the deadlines listed below. Early applicants will be eligible for larger scholarship opportunities. Click for a list of currently available programs.

10. Apply for a travel visa
Visa processes can be long and complex. AFS Staff will guide you through the process if a visa is required.

11. Prepare to go
Arrange for transportation to your gateway departure city. Learn all you can to help you prepare for life in your new country. Attend an in-person, AFS “pre-departure orientation” and the online orientation called Culture Trek. These will help to prepare you and your parents for your study abroad experience.

12. Pack your bags and embark on your journey!
