12/13/2006 - Holiday Fundraising Tips

Easy ways to raise money for your AFS experience! First, tell everyone you know you want to be an AFSer.

1. Sell cookies! Get a group of friends together to make holiday cookies. Then, set up a bake sale at your school, sporting event or shopping center. Make a poster that says all proceeds go towards your AFS study abroad program.

2. Advertise to your neighbors and local businesses your interest in putting up their holiday decorations in exchange for cash to help get you on your way.

3. Shop till you drop! Maybe you know someone or can advertise to find someone who would be glad to have you as their personal holiday shopper for a fee as a way to support your dreams to study abroad.

4. How’s your handwriting? Let family, friends, and businesses know you’d like to address their holiday cards starting at $1 a piece to help cover your AFS tuition.

5. Gift wrap extravaganza! Get paid to gift wrap for family and friends. You could also offer to baby-sit while parents have a chance to shop.

6. Are your parents or their friends throwing holiday parties at their jobs? You can help to set-up, take-down, or cater for all of those holiday parties. Another idea would be to get donated gifts and set up a silent auction to raise money for your AFS experience. You could also offer to baby-sit during holiday parties!

7. Your neighbors would be glad to have the snow or leaves shoveled from the driveway and sidewalks for a small fee.

8. For your own holiday gifts, ask family and friends to ‘buy’ a day of your AFS trip as your present. Just take the tuition of your AFS program and divide it by the number of days you’ll be in your host country to get the average cost of a day abroad. You could also have people ‘buy’ miles—figure out how many miles away the capital of your host country is from your home town and do the math!

9. Offer to write a Holiday Newsletter for family and friends. It is great practice for you to write your own monthly newsletters from abroad for a monthly subscription fee. We have had students receive subscription fees as high as $50.

10. Want to learn more about how you can raise money for your AFS experience? You and your parents can join your fellow future AFSers for a workshop via phone hosted by your AFS Application Advisors. Workshop spaces are available to students who have submitted the preliminary application. Call 1-800-AFS-INFO or email Katie McCracken. to save a spot. The workshops begin at 2:00pm PDT.
