Italy – Homestay Program (Northern Italy)
This program lets you experience Italy’s culture and learn the language. You begin by traveling to Tuscany for an orientation and six days immersed in the beautiful countryside. Mornings are for Italian lessons, and afternoons are filled with hands-on activities in Italian music, cuisine, art, and culture. There are three half-day trips to Siena, Florence, and the medieval village of San Gimignano. At the end of the camp, participants travel to their host families throughout the northern portion of Italy to join them in their everyday activities—and practice their new language! Students will conclude their program with a 2-day, 3-night visit of Rome and an end-of-stay orientation.
Japan – Language Study Program
After the introductory orientation, you’ll attend language classes (80 hours) and live with a host family. You’ll be placed in Japanese classes according to your skill level. Outside of that, there’ll be plenty of cultural and social events you can enjoy with many new friends. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in activities arranged by the school and AFS Japan.
Costa Rica – Community Service Program
If you like adventure and community service, this program is for you! Your luggage of choice will be a backpack as you help preserve the rainforests, contribute to community development, and earn a minimum of 40 credit hours. You will help preserve the amazing biodiversity of Costa Rica and protect the environment. You will also assist a community through projects geared toward improving the local schools or working with people. This physically challenging program, in which living conditions include a rustic lodge, also includes a short homestay experience, get-togethers, a two-day End-of-Stay Trip to a beach resort, and more.
China – Homestay Language Program
Learn Mandarin Chinese and have the opportunity to share your new language skills with your Chinese host family and friends. You will attend classes at a local school with other students to study Mandarin and other fascinating aspects of Chinese culture. As you make new friends and adjust to everyday life, you will be able to explore the bustling streets and unique lifestyle that is China. Learn Chinese and get ready for an incredible and memorable adventure in one of the world’s most intriguing countries!
New Zealand – Homestay & Outdoor Education Program
Rock climbing, canoeing, caving, whitewater rafting, and hiking–all led by professional guides…how’s that for adventure? You’ll spend three weeks at a camp with fun and rigorous outdoor activities, which will also develop your leadership, decision-making, and teamwork skills. In the four weeks that follow, you’ll live with a host family and participate in volunteer projects as you explore what it’s like to be a member of a family and community in New Zealand.
