10/6/2009 - AFS-USA Galatti Nominee Announced!

This week the 2009 AFS-USA Galatti Nominee was announced, as well as other volunteer nominees contending for this prestigious award.
Congratulations to the following volunteers nominated from their respective area teams: Pat Condra (Missouri Gateway); Roberta Mohatt (Alaska); Diane Gambill (Missouri Gateway); and Kathy Rees, (Greater Puget Sound).

It is with great pleasure to announce that AFS-USA’s 2009 Nominee for the AFS International Galatti Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service is Carol Ann Zimmerman of Sublette, Kansas.

The Galatti Award was established in 1983 and named after AFS founder Stephen Galatti. Stephen Galatti was an idealist, a visionary, a trail blazer and a pragmatist who built and transformed AFS from an organization that transported the war wounded into one that now provides cross-cultural experiences in the name of peace.

Since 1983, this award has honored AFS community volunteers whose commitment and exceptional dedication have advanced the mission and goals of AFS at the grass-roots level. It is the most prestigious commendation granted by the AFS International Board of Trustees for our volunteers. Throughout AFS, volunteerism is key in carrying out its mission of making it possible for individuals to become responsible global citizens as well as active participants in the creation of a more tolerant and peaceful world.

The Galatti Selection Committee selected the AFS-USA winner from other competitive nominations. Throughout her over 30 years of dedication to AFS, she has and continues to volunteer at the grass roots levels of AFS. A fellow volunteer writes, “Carol Ann Zimmerman is the epitome of a grassroots AFS volunteer—recruiter, supporter, advocate.”

Carol Ann started the AFS School Club which continues to be active and fundraise and to which a fellow volunteer writes, “Carol Ann sponsors and provides unending encouragement to the AFS Club at Sublette High School, thereby not only demonstrating AFS as a sponsoring organization, but perhaps more importantly providing an example to the students of volunteer service as a practicality rather than just a theoretical concept.”

Carol Ann is currently the Area Team Treasurer and continues to serve in numerous volunteer roles. She has hosted 13 times, finds host families, trains liaisons, and helps with arrival orientations to name just a few.

Please join us in congratulating Carol Ann in being selected as the AFS-USA nominee for the 2009 Galatti Award and enthusiastically promoting the mission of AFS through her deeds and actions.
Congratulations, Carol Ann, for being the 2009 AFS-USA Galatti Nominee!
