6/4/2007 - New Hope, MN Student Wins AFX Full Scholarship!

Insight News, Minneapolis, MN

Caitland Johnson, a Robbinsdale Cooper High School student from New Hope, has been awarded a full AFS Awards for Excellence scholarship, a distinction shared by only ten students nationwide. More than 1,200 students were nominated for this prestigious, merit-based program that awards full and partial scholarships for students to study abroad. Students are chosen based on leadership skills, service to the community, academic excellence and ambassadorial spirit, while the scholarships reflect the AFS-USA commitment to making its student exchange programs available to the best and the brightest students, irrespective of financial ability.

Caitland, who is a member of National Honor Society and studies Russian, French and Spanish, has also been an active volunteer in the community. Besides translating between the managers and the Spanish immigrants in her apartment complex, she also lends her language skills to a nearby daycare for impoverished Hispanic children. In her free time she volunteers with the elderly in an assisted living home.

Caitland will use her scholarship to study abroad with AFS, to gain firsthand knowledge of what it’s like to live as a member of a foreign family, school and community.

Caitland wrote, “The award is hands down the most exciting thing to happen to me—ever. This is an amazing opportunity and I cannot wait to learn about everything I can. My perspective and life will be changed—I’m sure if it!”

This year’s Awards for Excellence scholarships, totaling more than $200,000, provide the recipients with the opportunity to study abroad in more than forty countries around the world, such as Japan, Chile, Belgium or Turkey. This scholarship program is designed to increase awareness of the importance of student exchange and intercultural skills as part of a sound secondary education.

Each year, AFS awards more than $1.5 million in scholarships and financial aid to help make it possible for students to study abroad. AFS also makes it possible for families in the United States to have international experiences by hosting outstanding students and teachers from abroad.
