About Argentina
Mention Argentina and people think of gauchos, sultry tango dancers, or maybe Evita—but there’s more, from first-rate museums, galleries, theaters, and architecture to stunning natural wonders and a variety of landscapes that you will not find anywhere else.

The nation’s territorial sweep ranges from Iguazú Falls in the steamy northeastern rainforest, to glacier-topped mountains and penguin colonies in the south, to the world-famous broad and fertile plains of the Pampas. Sophisticated and lively Buenos Aires will keep you moving, whether you find yourself strolling down the Avenida 9 de Julio, one of the widest streets in the world; taking in an opera at the world-renowned Teatro Colón; or sipping mate (a kind of green tea) with friends. You might also take a liking to the country’s homegrown rock music, grooving to icons like Charly Garcia, Fito Paez, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, and Soda Stereo.

Europe’s influence is strong in Argentina, yet you’ll find Argentina has a vigorous identity of its own, placing high values on culture, tradition, and hospitality. AFS Argentina has the capacity to place some students in neighboring Uruguay.

Year and Semester Programs
The school year runs from March through December with a two-week vacation in July (subject to change in each province according to provincial laws). Classes are either in the morning or the afternoon, or in the case of technical schools, a combination of morning classes and afternoon practices. Teachers change rooms while you remain with your classmates (and new friends). You’ll study Spanish, literature, geography, biology, and math. When it comes to sports, soccer, volleyball, and basketball are the most popular. Upon arrival you will have an orientation and introduction to Buenos Aires. During the program, you’ll get together with other AFS Exchange Students by spending five days in another community. Quench your thirst for natural beauty with an optional trip to the majestic Iguazú Falls or the glaciers, offered at an additional cost.

NOTE: The Argentina travel visa process requires you to submit your passport number and validity dates as well as your full name, as it appears in the passport, to AFS by or before October 15, 2008.

The passport information you submit must be current and should not expire sooner than 3 months after your intended return from Argentina. If you do not have a passport or your passport will expire sooner than 3 months after your exchange has ended, please apply for, or renew, your passport right away.

This is only the first step of the travel visa process for Argentina. AFS will be sending you further instructions on how to apply for your travel visa by mid-November, if not sooner.

Summer Homestay Program
Improve your Spanish and learn about community life by living with a host family. There will be plenty to keep you busy, including picnics, sports, arts, new food like parrillada (mixed grill), camping, different types of national music (from tango to rock), and, of course, making new and long-lasting friends.

Summer Community Service Program
Spend a summer doing community service, and live with a host family to better understand the culture—and improve your Spanish as well! You might volunteer in an orphanage, help teach soccer to children with disabilities, or work on environmental projects restoring parks.

Summer Spanish Language Study Program
Spend the month of July in Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata, Paraná, Concepción del Uruguay, or Santiago del Estero studying Spanish! Your exciting summer experience includes four weeks of language study (20 hours per week taught by a certified teacher), living with a host family, and optional activities such as excursions around the country. You’ll receive a certificate for your language study at the end.

All programs, prices, and travel dates are subject to change without notice.
