About the Dominican Republic
Its geography will impress you, its cultural legacy will enchant you, and the people of this tropical island will forever stay in your heart. The geography of the Dominican Republic is the most diverse in the Caribbean, ranging from desert plains to rainforest valleys to 10,000-foot high mountains to white sand beaches. But don’t overlook its impressive historical legacy–Santo Domingo is the oldest city in the Americas. Its historic colonial quarter includes the Americas’ first cathedral, hospital, chapel, and university. However, the true charm and beauty of the Dominican Republic is reflected in its people. You’ll share their love of life and respect for traditions while experiencing what it means to feel at home in this wonderful—and welcoming—country.

Gap Program, Semester Community Service
You may be involved with projects in hospitals, nurseries, micro-finance development, and educational settings, or work on human rights issues or environmental projects. An arrival orientation introduces you to the country, the community service projects, and your host families. Enjoy living with your host family as you help—and learn about—Dominican communities and people.

Find Yourself in D.R.

“I am much more aware of myself and the world. I am also much more independent and I feel that after my experiences in the D.R., I could go wherever I wanted and do whatever I wanted, all by myself. I also came to understand a lot about the influences culture and society have on a person.” -U.S. to the Dominican Republic, Year
