Welcome to the E-Z Pass AFS Area Team!

Overview of AFS

AFS (formerly the American Field Service) is a leader in intercultural learning and offers international exchange programs in more than 40 countries around the world through independent, nonprofit AFS Organizations, each with a network of volunteers, a professionally staffed office, and headed up by a volunteer board.

We’ve been exchanging students throughout the world for 60 years. That’s six decades of history and experience in international education with an exemplary record of safety, security, and service to students, parents, and educators.

AFS' Mission Statement: "AFS-USA works toward a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership."

Overview of the E-Z Pass AFS Area Team

A number of years ago a few dedicated AFS volunteers in the New York and southern Connecticut region agreed to take on leadership roles and formed a chartered chapter with AFS, known as the E-Z Pass Chapter.  Why E-Z Pass?  Someone prior to the formation of our current chapter thought E-Z Pass (named after the E-Z Pass electronic toll tag, which originated in NYC) would be a fun name for the chapter.  We are now known as the E-Z Pass AFS Area Team.

Today our team encompasses more than just NYC.  E-Z Pass AFS covers a large geographic territory, including Long Island, all of New York City, southeastern New York and southern Connecticut.  We now have approximately 130 registered AFS Volunteers in our Area Team including many returnees (both recent and some dating as far back as the 1960’s), former and current host parents and siblings, as well as those who have not formerly participated with AFS but share our mission to promote a more peaceful and just world.

In 2015-16 we are hosting 31 students throughout the region. Annually, we send over 100 students to approximately 20 different countries abroad.  Our Area Team also regularly  hosts students through AFS-USA's Public Diplomacy Initiatives (aka Sponsored Programs), including students with YES, Congress-Bundestag, and FLEX scholarships.  Likewise, many participants in our Area Team have been awarded scholarships to study abroad with the YES and Congress-Bundestag programs as well as the National Security Language Initiative for Youth Program (NSLI-Y).
