Experience the magical country of Turkey for a full academic year, while living with a host family and attending a local high school.
Attending high school in Turkey may be quite demanding (though fulfilling!), as the country takes schooling very seriously. High school students in Turkey specialize in either mathematics and sciences or social studies, so you will be placed according to your community and academic background. You will also be required to wear a uniform.
Your local AFS chapter will organize activities throughout the year, which may include parties or excursions to other cities or regions in Turkey. Also, over the course of your program, AFS staff and volunteers will meet with you at orientations to evaluate your experience and help with your cultural adjustment.
In Turkey, you will find mosques on the European side of Istanbul and western-style suburbs on the Asian side; a Western economic system in an Islamic society; dynamic industrialization next door to historic buildings in neighborhoods dating from the Byzantine and Ottoman past; and a landscape ranging from Mediterranean coasts to jagged mountains. The cuisine is considered one of the finest in the world, and the people have a well-deserved reputation for friendliness and hospitality.
Please Note: Travel date ranges are provided to help with general scheduling. Please do not reserve any domestic travel based on these dates. AFS will notify confirmed participants with specific travel details approximately 45 days prior to departure. Programs, prices, and travel dates are subject to change without notice.
