Spain Summer Language Program

Spend your summer studying Spanish and soaking up the cultural and country of Spain! The program will be held in the city of Malaga, located in the Andalucia Province on the southern coast of Spain. Unlike most AFS programs, you will not be placed with a host family. You will be staying in a residence hall along with other American, Icelandic, and Italian students on the program.

Program Details

A program leader, assigned by AFS Spain, will be present throughout your stay for guidance and support. Residence hall monitors and staff will also be available on-site 24 hours per day. The ratio of participants to monitors is 9:1. All monitors are licensed and experienced working with youth.

60 hours of Spanish language classes (3 hours per day, 5 days per week) will be offered by a professional language school. Beginner Spanish speakers welcome. Your Spanish-speaking ability will be evaluated at the beginning of the program and you will be assigned to the appropriate class level. Each class will have approximately 10 students. A Certificate of Completion will be issued to each participant. Transportation between the residence hall, language school, and activity center will be provided. Planned excursions include a visit to Granada to see the Alhambra as well as trips to the cities of Ronda and Cordoba. Additional information will be provided to participants prior to departure.

Meals and Diet

Breakfast and dinner will be served at the residence hall. Lunch and afternoon activities will be offered at a local community center and sports club. While each region of Spain has its own food specialties, Spanish cuisine reflects the country’s many historical influences. Generally speaking, Spanish cooking is Mediterranean in style with liberal use of olive oil, garlic, onions, tomatoes and peppers.

About Spain

At the crossroads of Europe, Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Atlantic, Spain has developed a rich culture. There are four official languages – Catalan, Galician, Basque, and Spanish – and seventeen political regions (comunidades autonomas), as well as a variety of cuisines, lifestyles, festivals, architecture and music. Spain is a multicultural and multilingual nation and AFS places students in all communities, including those in which Spanish is not the primary language spoken at home or in school. Embrace the diversity and get to know Spain as a local.

Please Note: Travel date ranges are provided to help with general scheduling. Please do not reserve any domestic travel based on these dates. AFS will notify confirmed participants with specific travel details approximately 45 days prior to departure. Programs, prices, and travel dates are subject to change without notice.
