The South African government spends nearly 6% of its budget on education (one of the highest rates in the world!) so you will experience a demanding academic environment. Most schools are taught in English and you will most likely have to wear a uniform.
During your year, Your local chapter may organize activities which may include parties or excursions to other cities or regions in South Africa. Also, over the course of your program, AFS staff and volunteers will hold a multiple AFS orientations to evaluate your experience and help with your cultural adjustment.

Living and studying in South Africa for one academic semester will be a life-changing experience to say the least. While living with a host family and attending school you will really get enough time to better understand the cultural workings of a country steeped in fascinating history.

South Africa, “The Rainbow Nation,” has many strong ethnic groups, each proud of its language, traditions, and religious beliefs. You’ll also find many different local cuisines to sample. In South Africa you’ll have a chance to witness the natural beauty from the vast Karoo Desert to the picturesque coastal towns of the Garden Route to the subtropical mountain ranges in KwaZulu-Natal. Sports like rugby, soccer and netball (basketball) are popular.
