Portugal Semester High School Program – Spring Departure

A semester in Portugal will offer a great opportunity to learn more about this country’s rich history, while attending school and living with a host family.

High school in Portugal is primarily lecture-based, and you study a minimum of five subjects. AFS Portugal will help you obtain textbooks and cover the costs of transportation and lunch. You’ll find school to be the best place to meet new friends and get involved.

Your local AFS chapter may organize activities throughout your semester, which often include parties or excursions to other cities or regions in Portugal. Also, over the course of your program, AFS staff and volunteers will organize occasional AFS orientations to evaluate your experience and help with cultural adjustment.

About Portugal

Discover Europe’s hidden treasure. Portugal is one of the oldest countries in Europe, and the Portuguese are proud of their long history. They also take pride in their language, which has spread far beyond this small country’s shores. You’ll find folk festivals, traditional Fado music, and markets overflowing with fish, fruit, and flowers. The local cuisine relies heavily on the sea, and you’ll find that the Portuguese prepare fish in hundreds of different ways. Each region, even the smallest village, keeps particular traditions alive year round through colorful decoration, food, drinks, dances, and songs.
