Live with a host family and attend high school in the Netherlands for one academic year.
High school in the Netherlands has two different types: HAVO and VWO. HAVO schools are liberal arts high schools which Dutch students attend for five years; graduates normally go on to business or technical school. VWO schools are for Dutch students planning on attending university, and AFSers attending these schools are placed with fourth- or fifth-year students. Classes in VWO schools are the same as the HAVO schools, except that students will focus on a specialty for their final two years. Your primary mode of transportation to and from school will likely be by bicycle. Schools in Holland usually offer side-trip excursions, and many have started “survival weeks” in the Belgian Ardennes Forest.
About 10 weeks in to your stay, you will have an orientation, once again organized at the national level. This will last for 2-3 days and will focus on cultural and school adjustment. You will also meet with AFS staff and volunteers to evaluate your first few weeks and be offered guidance to make the transition as smooth as possible. You will also be offered a 2 day mid-stay orientation about 5 months in to your stay.
The Netherlands is a nation of very independent-minded people who are often characterized by their international outlook, tolerance of others’ beliefs, and love of personal freedom. The Netherlands has an excellent public transportation system, from the seaside to tiny villages to the ultra-hip capital of Amsterdam; and people also ride bikes everywhere. Half of the country lies below sea level on land created by walling off the North Sea with dikes. The Dutch love to ice skate on the frozen canals in the winter.
