Germany Semester High School Program – Fall Departure

Spend one semester attending a local high school and living with a German host family.

Most AFSers are placed in one of three types of school in Germany: Realschule, leading up to tenth grade, Gymnasium, college preparatory, and Gesamtschule, comprehensive school. AFSers are usually enrolled in grade ten or eleven. Lectures in class are interactive; students are expected to take part actively in the lesson by asking questions, commenting and discussing the topics. Students are also given an “oral grade” that is important for the overall grade.

In addition to a series of required orientations, you may have the opportunity to take part in a two-week mid-stay orientation. Participation is optional, and the cost is approximately €200. This orientation will be dedicated to the exploration of a special topic, such as environmental issues, human rights or the reunification of East and West Germany. You will stay with a different host family in a different part of Germany away from your primary placement (for example, in the East if you have been living in the West).

The Semester High School Program in Germany has a language requirement. Applicants must have completed a minimum 1 semester of German-language study, or the equivalent, in order to participate. Learn more about the language requirement

Germany Year High School Program – Fall Departure

Live with a host family in Germany while attending a local high school for one full academic year.

Many schools organize one school trip during the year and as an exchange student you will have an option to participate. If you choose to do so, you should bring sufficient funds (approximately €350) to cover the expense of this event.
