Austria Year High School Program – Fall Departure
Spend one full academic year in Austria and improve your German language skills while living with a host family and attending a local high school in your host community.
Going to high school in Austria will be a unique and demanding (yet fulfilling!) experience. Did you know that Austrian students attend eight years of high school? Austria offers two types of high school: university preparatory or technical/vocational school. Both offer great opportunities to experience high school abroad. You will probably be placed in Year 11 with other students of similar age.
Your local AFS chapter may organize activities throughout the year, which include parties or excursions to other cities or regions in Austria. Also, over the course of the program, AFS staff and volunteers will hold orientations and evaluate your experience to help with your cultural adjustment.
The Year High School Program in Austria requires applicants to enroll in an online Rosetta Stone language course and study independently prior to departure and while on program. The online course will be organized and monitored by AFS Austria who will email registration and login instructions to each student in the months prior to departure. Students will be asked to pay €65 (approx $95) to cover the cost of the course. Learn more about the language requirement

About Austria
Austria has historically been a crossroads for communication in Europe. Its citizens are known for their "Gemutlichkeit," their characteristic way of taking things easy. One way they relax is by skiing, an activity many believe was invented here; it is even possible to ski in summer! Between New Year’s and Ash Wednesday there are thousands of galas throughout the country. Famous Austrians include musician Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; artist Gustav Klimt; and actor and politician Arnold Schwarzenegger.

AFS will notify confirmed participants with specific travel details approximately 45 days prior to departure. Programs, prices, and travel dates are subject to change without notice.
