Malaysia Gap Year High School Program – Spring Departure

A full year in Malaysia gives you a truly unique opportunity to experience an amazing country and culture, while you attend a local high school and live with host family.

You will attend a public school, and uniforms are mandatory. The school year runs from January to December, with several vacations. The language of instruction is Bahasa Melayu, but English is a compulsory second language. You will have many opportunities to get involved in other activities, as Malaysian teenagers love sports, such as soccer, badminton, and water sports. All year program participants will be offered a 3 day mid-stay orientation about 5-6 months in to your stay. This will be a time to meet with staff and volunteers, evaluate the first half of your experience, and gain more tips to aid your cultural adjustment.

Malaysia Year Community Service Program – Spring Departure

Live with a host family for an entire year while gaining experience working with a community project.

You will be placed with a host family and immersed in community life and your work placement. It will prepare you to face the challenges you will meet throughout your career. Work placements include volunteering with orphans, the elderly, children with disabilities, people with AIDS, and many more.

In addition to various orientations provided by AFS, many local chapters will organize activities for participants and host families throughout the year. These will vary from chapter to chapter but may include parties or excursions to other cities or regions in Malaysia.

About Malaysia

Native Malays share citizenship with ethnic Chinese and Indians, and though the state religion is Islam, Buddhist shrines and Hindu temples are as commonplace as mosques. The diversity of Malaysia is celebrated throughout the year with multicultural festivals and flavorful food. You may have time to visit a spice market or learn about local activities like sepak takraw (a kickball type of volleyball), giant top spinning, and kite-flying.
