Get ready for exciting semester learning about life in a developing nation while living and working alongside community members in a community-based service organization. Your time in Ghana will give you a strong understanding of Ghanaian culture and African history.
You will live either with a host family or housing provided by the community-based organization you work with. Most placements are located in urban or suburban areas.
AFS will offer multiple orientations to teach you about local culture and Ghanaian languages such as Twi. Volunteers will meet with you regularly to make sure your project is coming along well and helping with any cultural adjustments. You will also have time to travel inside the country to explore and absorb the country’s cultural diversity. You’ll experience the economy, politics, and social life in contemporary Ghana firsthand.

| Gap Year High School Program - Fall | About 10 months | September 2012 - June 2013 | $13,000 | Closed | Read More + |
This great program gives you the opportunity to live with a host family and study for a full academic year in one of West Africa’s safest and most accommodating countries.
Studying abroad in Ghana offers a unique opportunity to combine high school with an after-school community service project. You will most likely be placed in the last year of high school. Also, uniforms at high school are required. AFS Ghana organizes various study tours to other parts of the country. On these trips, you will experience other interesting historical sites and cultural centers.
AFS Ghana offers the unique opportunity to combine community service with your academics. If you'd like, you can volunteer after school, on the weekend, or even elect to do 1 semester of school and a second "semester" of volunteer work. Volunteer community service projects could include helping out in orphanages, studying traditional songs and folklore, or HIV/AIDS awareness programs.
Ghana is one of the friendliest West African nations. While English is the official language, there are more than 52 native tongues and hundreds of dialects. Most Ghanaians live in small villages where society is focused on family and community. Vibrant markets offer everything from fruits and clothes to hair braiding; and at night, you’ll hear music everywhere
