Finland Gap Year High School Program – Fall Departure

Spend an academic year in Finland, while living with a host family and attending a local high school in your host community!

Attending high school in Finland will be a very interesting and fulfilling experience. Most AFS students are placed in the first or second class of “upper-secondary school,” because final year students must concentrate on studying for this exam. Most subjects are compulsory, but there are also elective courses that are worth looking into. You should have at least 25 hours of school per week.

Your local AFS chapter will organize activities throughout the year, which may include parties or excursions to other cities or regions in Finland. Also, over the course of your program, AFS staff and volunteers will meet with you at orientations to evaluate your experience and help with your cultural adjustment.

About Finland

Finland is alive with culture, outdoor activities, lush landscapes, and the midnight sun. There are multitudes of arts festivals, a wide range of sporting events, and a balanced mix of small-town life and modern cities. Common sense, no fuss, and making things work, sums up how the Finns operate. Be ready for anything: you will be placed anywhere between the northernmost village Utsjoki and southernmost town of Hanko.
