| Semester Community Service Program - Spring | About 5 months | March 2012 - August 2012 | $9,500 | Closed | Read More + |
Take off to Brazil for an unforgettable semester in South America! While living with a host family, you will serve your community by working on a local project while learning about the Brazilian way of life.
After your welcome orientation, you will travel to your new host community and begin an intensive Portuguese language training program. Your work site will vary from a hospital or health clinic, a zoo, a school teaching about social and health issues, centers or homes working with the blind or those with developmental disabilities, working for an HIV or AIDS prevention program, women and children support centers, or doing marine habitat research.
AFS will provide several orientations throughout your semester in Brazil (including a mid-stay orientation in Rio de Janeiro). These meetings will give you a chance to gather important information about your host country, to meet other AFS volunteers from around the world, to share experiences and make friends. These group activities give you a chance to understand and process your intercultural learning experience during your time abroad as well as when you are returning home.

Brazil is a land of diversity, both in its landscape of rainforest, beaches and city, as well as its people who include native Indians and people of Portuguese, European, and African ancestries. It is home to Carnaval, a world-famous celebration, and daily celebrations like soccer matches, festivals, street parades, guitar gatherings and barbecues. Family life is important here, so don’t be surprised if many extended family members want to get to know you during your stay.
