One LENS Program

In line with AFS-USA’s commitment to experiential learning, we partnered with Global Nomads Group on the One LENS (Look, Engage, Network, Sense) program. This project incorporated participatory film making, physical exchanges, media literacy workshops and online project-based networking which engaged youth in active mutual dialogue and empowered them with media tools to support their creative process.

Program Details

AFS Malaysia, through their collaboration with the Malaysia Federation for the Deaf, was paired with the Indiana School for the Deaf, Tallwood High School in Virginia Beach worked with a school in Indonesia, and New Design High School in New York City partnered with Vietnam.

Two to four student representatives and one educator from each school were selected to make a three week, in-person visit to their partner school in the U.S. and partake in a variety of activities focusing on media literacy in a Web 2.0 age. Students and educators from the United States also visited their partner schools in Asia in this reciprocal exchange. The exchanges culminated with a local media festival, where students had the opportunity to showcase their public service announcements or digital stories.

The following videos were collaboratively produced, directed and edited entirely by the students.
