Country Information

Australians are known for their laid-back and welcoming approach to life. They love the outdoors and sports. The “land down under” is the smallest continent and the largest island in the world. Multicultural celebrations and festivals are integral to this country, home to the Aborigines, the oldest surviving human society in the world. The Great Barrier Reef, beautiful beaches, lush rainforests, vast deserts, and unique wildlife can all be found in Australia.

Stories

I’ve been impressed with AFS students. They’re committed and driven for educational experience. The girls would stay after school just to learn more and got ahead in classes and wanted to learn. You’re not getting problem kids, you’re getting the upper echelon, driven kids. It’s an awesome experience because so many kids [in the area] are not exposed to change or diversity. I endorse it [hosting] one thousand percent!

Lifestyle and Family

Australians are open and straightforward. They are informal and use humor a great deal when they relate to each other. Australians are family-oriented and attend sporting events, go to the beach, and enjoy picnics as a family. Children are generally independent; although they are expected to respect their parents, they can disagree with them. Everyone shares in the housework.

Teen Life and Sports

Most teens enjoy activities such as spending time on the Internet, going to concerts, house parties and movie theatres. Teens also enjoy Australian football, soccer, rugby, cricket, basketball, swimming, surfing, tennis, netball, bicycling, hiking and camping.

Language and Religion

English is the primary language of Australia. About 2/3 of the population is Christian, minority groups are made up mostly of Buddhist and Muslim.

Exchange Student Samantha's Mother's Day Message to her Host Mother, Cindy

This is for my host mum, Cindy Stanislaw.

A Halo
A halo that reflects a life
kindness, and caring.

...Eyes that sparkle with pride
and show how much she believes in you.

Shoulders that have been slept on
and wept on and
carried a world or two.

Arms that never run out of hugs.
Hands that know
just when to hold on
and when to let go.

A mind filled with amazing things,
from fairytales to family tails
and long-ago stories of you.

A smile that caninto your heart
and warm you faster than hot chocolate.

A heart of gold
that holds more love
than you can possibly imagine.

Thanks for everything Cindy :)
