Family visits, soccer workouts & being Facebook status update-worthy

by “Our Window to the World”

Mathias and young Simon at the Pike Place Market in Seattle

On Monday Mathias began his last term of American High School. In 3 ½ short months he goes back to Germany. That’s the bad part. The good part is that it seems like this will be a better school term for him. Last term he had a couple classes with mostly younger kids whom he didn’t know very well (and apparently he wasn’t all that interested in getting to know them, but that’s another story). This term his classes are all with kids his own age, and he has friends in every class. Mathias’s social problems seem to be behind him for now, and he’s back to being too busy for my liking. He has spent time with friends every night since Sunday, and very early this morning he even went to the midnight showing of “The Hunger Games” with a group of friends.

These are exciting times for Mathias. Read the rest of this entry »

“Totally awesome”: German family meals & kitty affection

by “Our Window to the World”

It’s been a while since I posted on this blog. It’s been quite busy between work and running around after Mathias. Ski season ended this week, and I have to say I’m glad. Three nights a week Mathias had either ski practice or a meet, and usually wasn’t home until almost 10:00. He was always tired, and I felt like we almost never saw him. Read the rest of this entry »

Making Valentines

by “The Peterman Family”

Today after softball practice the girls informed me that they wished to make Valentine’s for their friends. The key words here are THEY & MAKE. J So after diner their dad took them to the 7 Day Store to buy some candy. When they got home they asked me if I had anything that they could use to make Valentines. For those of you who may not know me well, I was Martha Stewart before Martha was! So we went searching in my craft room. Read the rest of this entry »

My sister Holly bought our family these turtles several years  ago. One to represent each of the people who lived here at the time, (from right to left in the top photo) me, Rick, Tori, Ian, and my mom. Read the rest of this entry »

Saying Goodbye to Tomas

by “Tomás in Tennessee”

One week ago Tomás left Nashville bound for New York City, then the following day onto his hometown in Germany.

We had a crazy week or so leading up to departure day. From a “goodbye” party/event/sleepover on Friday with several other exchangers that I hear involved some balloon boobies and a hula hoop, Tomas turning 17 (which he didn’t but they told the people at the restaurant that he did), and Tomas giving a man roses-still not exactly sure how that happened but everyone thought it was rather hysterical! (On a side note this was the first of the “last”s with Tomas. The last time I would take him to meet up with friends. I cried all the way home after dropping him off at the mall.)

Saturday was half recovery day for Tomas from the events from the previous night and half spending some family time at the movies and then fro-yo. We were going to go see a scary movie but it got bad reviews so Mission Impossible it was and then to Sweet Cece’s which is a frozen yogurt place that you put your own toppings on. Tomas said they have similar places in Brazil. Then we started packing…and I cried. Read the rest of this entry »

Game Day in Florida

by “The Peterman Family”

Uncle Hugh is our hero!  He got Rodger, Grandpa and the girls tickets to see the Jacksonville Jaguar play some football!  So this morning, January 1st, they took off and drove down to Florida.

Here they are outside the stadium.

Happy New Year!

by “Our Window to the World”

I can’t believe 2011 is almost gone. We had a very nice Christmas, even though the lack of snow was disappointing. We had told Mathias that our families tend to give lots of presents at Christmas. Bryan’s mother and aunt had asked what he would want. We didn’t want them getting him presents that he would just have to pack and bring home, so we suggested some of his favorite American snack foods. He unwrapped boxes and boxes of Cheez-its and Kraft Mac and Cheese and bags of Skittles.  Because, of course, Mac and Cheese is a staple food, and Cheez-its are awesome. Guest Blogger Aunt Jane on Christmas

by “The Peterman Family”

Merry Christmas from South Carolina!  Tonight we had the absolute pleasure of adding a little Denmark tradition to our Christmas Eve festivities. Nanna told us about how at home she and her family dance around the tree and we decided to give it a try! May I say – what a WONDERFUL tradition! We had a blast “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree.”

It took a little prodding to get the guys in the groove…but in no time at all they were in the spirit of the season and fun was had by all.
