Irish Summer Culture and Community Service
Join us in Ireland this summer!
Ireland has a rich and fascinating history and we’ll be learning about it first-hand. From our homebase in the western county of Donegal, we’ll take field trips to other parts of Ireland, including Dublin and the counties of Meath, Cavan, Fermanagh, Sligo, and Derry as well as visiting castles and historical sites.
Through informal workshops, we’ll learn about Irish culture and the history of the Vikings, Celts, Irish Emigration, the Irish peace process, and much more. In the evenings, we’ll enjoy traditional Irish folk music and even learn the “Ceili” dance.
• Meals and lodging
• Departure: July 12
These are just some of the activities we'll enjoy while we're in Ireland!
Excursion: The Hill of Tara
The ancient and famous seat of the Irish High Kings. This spot is also associated with St. Patrick and with the great liberator, Daniel O’Connell.
Abseil (rappelling) and climbing, obstacle courses
Join in with the Bundoran Tidy Towns Committee to assist with the annual Beach Clean-up.
Take part in a re-enactment of a Celtic Tribe, with activities which include an obstacle course & currach (old Irish Boat) building. An interactive and fun way to learn about Celtic History.
After completing the currach construction, each “tribe” will nominate sailors to test the currach in a “Clash of the Chieftains.” Students from Ireland and Europe will also participate.
The western coast of Ireland is a world-reknowned haven for surfers! Lessons will be offered and beginners are welcome to learn. All equipment & lifeguarding is provided.
Excursion: Sliabh League
The highest sea-cliffs in Ireland, also located in the Gaelic-speaking area of Donegal. As the ancient home of St. Colmcille, it’s a wonderfully scenic trip.
Irish History Session
Learn about the Irish Famine and the Irish emigration to the USA. You’ll also learn to make the best Irish potato dishes including boxty, colcannon and potato bread.
Cliff Jumping and Kayaking
Enjoy canoeing and kayaking on beautiful and scenic Lake Leitrim. Then get ready for the Rougey Cliff-Jump experience! (Don’t worry… it’s safe and loads of fun!)
Arts, Crafts, and Music
Attend sessions on Irish traditional dance, songs, art, and craftmaking.
Ballyshannon, Donegal, and Derry
Visit Ballyshannon, one of the oldest towns in Ireland, and see Abbey Ruins, Gatsby Cave, Rory Gallagher Statue & St. Patrick’s Well. On then to Donegal Town & Donegal Castle. On another day, experience the walled city of Derry, famous for its history related to conflict and resolution, and the site of the infamous “Bloody Sunday.”
