Visa Process Overview
Below is a general overview of your expected student visa or residence permit application process. Step-by-step instructions on how to apply for your student visa will be posted below as soon as they are updated for your specific departure cycle. As instructions are posted for your program and cycle, you will receive an email notification.

What type of visa do I need?
You will be applying for a Single-Entry Visa for Russia.
How do I apply for the visa?You must send your passport and additional documents to AFS-USA prior to departure and AFS will apply for the visa on your behalf. Your passport with the visa in it will be returned to you before departure. Upon arrival in Russia, AFS-Russia will help you obtain a Residence Permit.
What documents will I need to collect in order to apply for the visa?- United States Passport valid for at least six months after your return
- Visa Application Form
- Passport-sized Photographs
- HIV Exam Results
- Money Order for Visa Fee
Requirements may vary between Consulates. Additional documents may be required. Please do not begin collecting your documents until notified by AFS.
You are also required to bring a notarized Parental Consent Form (Who Needs to Sign?) with you to Russia for the purpose of obtaining your residence permit.
When do I apply for the visa?AFS-USA must receive your passport, additional documents, and visa fee one month before departure, at the latest.
How much will the visa cost?There is a visa processing fee of $140 USD. If your supporting documents from AFS cannot be obtained in time, you may need to expedite the visa process, which will cost $250 USD. The residence permit will cost an additional $75 USD and must be paid in Euros after arrival.
Are there any other expected costs?There are many additional costs involved in obtaining, notarizing, and mailing the required documents.
Are any of these costs covered in my AFS program tuition?No, your program fee does not cover any of the costs related to obtaining your passport or visa.
Can I travel before the start of my program?You should not plan any excursions outside of the United States three months prior to your program. As stated, obtaining a visa takes time and your passport will be required. If you travel before the start of your program and do not allow enough time for AFS to procure your visa, you will run the risk of not being able to participate on your program.
Full Visa InstructionsIf you are participating in a Year or Semester program to Russia, you will be notified when the full visa instructions are available. Do not begin the visa process until you are notified by AFS.
