You do not need a visa to enter Costa Rica. You must obtain a Student Residence Permit after your arrival.
How do I apply for the visa? You are required to bring your passport, additional documents, and the appropriate fees with you to Costa Rica. You will be allowed to enter Costa Rica as a tourist. Shortly after arrival, AFS-Costa Rica will assist you in acquiring a residence permit.
What documents will I need to bring with me to Costa Rica to apply for the residence permit? The following documents must be notarized, obtain a State Authentication from the Secretary of State’s office, and be legalized at the appropriate Consulate Office of the Costa Rican Embassy before being sent to AFS-USA:
Additional documents may be required. Please do not begin collecting your documents until notified by AFS
You must pay $379 - $435 in US cash for immigration fees after you arrive in Costa Rica. You may withdraw these fees once you arrive in the country. Fees may vary significantly depending on how many documents you are submitting and if your Consulate had you pay the legalization fee in the US or will have you pay in Costa Rica.
Are there any other expected costs? There are additional costs involved in obtaining, notarizing, legalizing, translatiing, and mailing the required documents.
Are any of these costs covered in my AFS program tuition? No, your program fee does not cover any of the costs related to obtaining your passport or residence permit.
Can I travel before the start of my program? You should not plan any excursions outside of the United States three months prior to your program. If you travel before the start of your program and do not allow enough time for AFS to procure your residence permit, you will run the risk of not being able to participate on your program.
If you are participating in a Year or Semester program to Costa Rica, you will be notified when the full residence permit instructions are available. Do not begin the residence permit process until you are notified by AFS.
If you are participating in a summer program to Costa Rica, please see the Visa Information for the Summer Program.
Fees and requirements are determined by immigration authorities and are subject to change at any time. For help with any terms, please view the Visa Glossary.
