Residence Permit Process Overview
Below is a general overview of your expected student visa or residence permit application process. Step-by-step instructions on how to apply for your student visa will be posted below as soon as they are updated for your specific departure cycle. As instructions are posted for your program and cycle, you will receive an email notification.

What type of visa do I need?
You are not required to apply for a visa for a study program in Austria. You will be required to obtain a Residence Permit upon arrival.
How do I apply for the residence permit?After arrival, AFS-Austria will help you obtain your residence permit (which involves registering at the local Registration authority in your host community).
What documents will I need to bring with me to Austria in order to apply for the residence permit?- United States Passport valid at least six months after your return
- Passport-sized Photographs
- Birth Certificate
- Parental Consent Form (Who needs to sign?)
- Official Police Clearance (Must be completed within three months of departure)
You will also receive additional documents from AFS-USA and AFS-Austria necessary for applying for your residence permit. Do not begin collecting your documents until notified by AFS.
How much will the residence permit cost?The Residence Permit fee is usually between €100-150 and must be paid in Austria.
Are there any other expected costs?There are many additional costs involved in obtaining, translating, notarizing, and legalizing the required documents.
Are any of these costs covered in my AFS program tuition?No, your program fee does not cover any of the costs related to obtaining your passport or Residence Permit.
Can I travel before the start of my program?Although you must be in your home community for the Pre-Departure Orientation, obtaining the Residence Permit will not place any limitations on your travel.
Full Residence Permit InstructionsIf you are participating in a Year program to Austria, you will be notified when the full residence permit instructions are available. Do not begin the residence permit process until you are notified by AFS.
