Internship with Children in Fiji

Make a lasting impact on a student's life through teaching English and other life skills in Fiji.

Program overview

Interns will be based initially at our main base in the Dawasamu District on the east coast of Viti Levi Island. The traditional villages, dense jungle, mountains, and beautiful coastline of the area makes a truly amazing environment in which to live and work.

Working in local rural schools and also in surrounding communities depending on the requirements at the time, applicants focus on providing educational activities and supporting classroom activities. Due to the long duration of the internship project, applicants will have the opportunity to really make a huge different in the early developmental stages of these local children's lives.

After the 12 week training phase conducted on our volunteer project sites, successful candidates will start a 12-week work placement with a partner organisation or assist the field team in the operation and management of our own projects. With both pathways, applicants work alongside professional teams, gaining valuable experience throughout.

This internship offers the opportunity to gain additional qualifications and experience in a teaching environment, offering a fantastic starting point for developing a career in education.

This internship requires a full time commitment. Depending on your length of stay volunteers can expect to have a few free weekends to explore the surround islands and local sights.

Where you'll stay

During your project dates your accommodation and food are included in the project cost. The base is located on the in the Dawasamu District on the east coast of Viti Levi Island. Accommodation is basic and you will be sharing in mixed dorm rooms with bunkbeds. There is limited running water. Food is basic (rice, pasta, potatoes with fresh veg orders once a week). Volunteers take turns preparing the daily meals in the communal kitchen. There is limited mobile reception.

Activities and Training

Things to do

Applicants are welcome to organize side trips for their free time or pre or post their project experience. All associated costs and travel expenses are not included in the project fee and need to be factored into the volunteer's own budget. Fiji is a beautiful and exotic destination with picturesque white sand beaches, world class dive sites, and Fiji’s famous culture of hospitality and warmth. As an island nation, many activities are water based! Starting locally, just a short boat ride volunteers can visit the famous pod of dolphins residing all year round on Moon Reef, hike into forests and swim in hidden waterfalls and visit one of Fiji’s famous island resorts.

With many local dive shops in the area, applicants can complete their PADI Open Water course and take advantage of the endless diving opportunities available.

Fiji’s capital city, Suva, is only a few hours from all our project sites, known for its relaxed atmosphere, energetic nightlife, large farmers market and atmospheric port. The old historical capital of Fiji, Levuka, makes for an interesting day trip and is accessible by ferry and small boat and located on the nearby Ovalau Island.

Orientation and Training

Staff in the field will provide training on the skills required, but you may benefit from learning more about local history, culture and customs before you travel.

Application Requirements

All volunteers are encouraged to learn more about local history, culture and customs before travelling. All training will be taught in the field.

Applicants need not have any specific skills just an enthusiasm and passion for contributing to the project and the local partner objectives. Applicants need to be physically fit and healthy as they will be hiking long distances daily. Please note we cannot provide specific medical advice. Please consult your primary care provider (doctor, GP, etc.) or visit a travel clinic for further information.
